INDIGENOUS CLOTHING RESEARCH

It is common practice and highly encouraged to include an indigenous consultant on any production involving indigenous or indigenous-inspired costuming or content.

Purpose

In creating this database of research, we hope to empower film/tv/theatre costumers with the knowledge to respectfully assist indigenous filmmakers in telling Indigenous stories.

Scope

While this project is being made with the intent to scale outwards in future years, the initial creation of this site will focus exclusively on areas and nations within the Pacific Northwest. We will be focusing on providing links to books, museums, creators, and any other visual or text-based information regarding garments worn by Indigenous and First Nations. We will include both historical and contemporary information. We will also strive to include examples of films/tv/shorts that have been costumed by indigenous/first nations people or where an indigenous/first nations consultant was actively involved.

This research was created by Capilano University costuming students, supervised by faculty. Something missing? Let us know: dgingrich@capilanou.ca
